Pirates.....No not the one's you see in movies...I'm talking about book pirates....People who burn or sell illegal copies of books and other media stuff....Book theft has been going on for a very long time, but the more time passes the worse it is getting. In case you don't know what I'm talking about let me give you a run down...There are sites that are selling or posting books illegally. Some places resell them and make profit of your work and others just give your work away for free.
That is wrong...No matter what you call it, it's theft...Authors work hard on creating books and getting them out there for readers. It's not an easy job to publish a book. So much work goes into one single book no matter if it's a print book or ebook...It's very hard work, and when you find out that people are distributing your work out there for free it really sucks....
There are so many places doing this and many times authors don't even know about this happening to their work. Authors reply on the kindness of people to inform them about stuff like this....I know that if my work is out there illegally I would want to know..When books get stolen from authors they suffer...This is their living and for some their only income as well.
What I'm trying to say is that stealing books from authors affects us is more ways then one...
It affects the publisher and all the people who worked so hard to help the author bring their baby to life.

All I can do is ask that you don't support or contribute to places like this. Things like this have to be stopped.
I truly hope that one day there will be a way to put a stop to book theft....
One can only hope...

Sav, Great topic, t is sad but oh so true.
I mean these authors put their own blood into these books and should have the respect of people who buy them not to sell them out on the black market.
That is just WRONG!
Great Blog hun...people are so weird these days. They'll do anything to make a quick buck and that's pretty sad. I feel sorry for those who have to work hard, then get their wonderful work taken away by disrespectful people. I hope this stops soon. Great work hun
Deb I dont think they care, as long as people can make money they will do whatever it takes...
Denise, thank you...it is sad and there is no way to stop it because once on place gets shut down many more open up....
As an author, I can say it's seriously irritating. I don't know if mine are being up for grabs like that, but who knows.
I left a publisher a while back and she SHOULD have taken my stuff off her website and out of circulation from Lulu.com and all that.
It took about six months, a good talking to by my new publisher, and the threat of Legal action for her to cease and desist.
Unfortunately, I don't know if she made any money in those six months on my works because I think the company has since gone under.
We put our emotions, imagination, and time into bringing characters to life, making readers believe in the storyline we write. Now we're having our work, and our time violated by thieves?
How would they like to be in our shoes?... wait, don't answer that.. I don't want them to be. I want them in jail.
Dianet, see your story gets me all mad...you don't deserve that..Nobody does and no matter what we all still have to deal with it....We work hard and have to fight even harder..it really gets on my last nerve that we cant stop this from happening
Well, before that, it took me a long time to trust an editor and I was really touchy about who got to see my work.
Before I was published, even on the Erotic Lit website I sometimes do short stories for.. which tells you how long it's been.. I wrote a story and a "friend" said they'd edit it for me.
So, being the trusting soul I was.. and really thought he was going to look it over and suggest changes and give me some feedback. Because, let's face it, that's what friends were for, right?
Well, this "friend" took my work, changed a few words around, and got it published under HIS name, claiming it was his work. GRRRRRR.. the little snot didn't even change the title, or the names of the main characters!
Now you see why I had a hard time trusting anyone to look at my stuff. When I started writing freebie erotica, though, the owners gently nudged me into taking my stuff to an editor. After that, it was easy.
This is why I write for Firedrakes now. My editor IS my Publisher. or vicea versa. I trust her and she's been my editor ever since my first couple of months at Triskelion in 2004.
But yeah, it burned me.. but he got caught plagarizing some famous author a while back.. after I'd forgotten about my fiasco. heheh Karma bit him good and he had a bunch of cash to pay back.
Diane, oh boy now that was horrible but I have had something like that happen to me...except for me someone stole my music and was going to release it as their own....I don't blame you for not trusting people....it's hard to
This is a subject I feel strongly about. What brought it back up front was the theft of Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer. How someone can take another's work and spread it everywhere is beyond belief. I've heard of publishers taking partial stories and then finishing the story and publishing it without the author's knowledge. How can this be done allowed?
I thought the worst was when an e book was passed from friend to friend like a paperback book would be.
I hear of stores that are used book stores for e books. They purchase a book once and then sell it over and over. Is there anyway that authors can be compensated similar to the way Blockbuster or Net Flicks does it? This way they can resell and you would get you little cut also. Too bad these resellers or distributors of ARC or working copies couldn't be prosecuted. Sometimes it only takes going after one to stop a bunch.
yes it is sad, some people go as far as selling it on sites like ebay and other palces..maybe one day there will be a way to stop it...
For now people can do something about it by not going to places like that and taking the work even if it is free...
I hate that this happens. I believe one of the reasons is that the higher ups don't see ebooks as 'real' books yet. If this happened with a print-published book it would be taken care of much sooner. As the push towards going green continues I hope the attitude some have about ebooks changes as well.
Kissa
Kissa, that is so true. Many people still dont view ebooks as books..Ebook or print book it is a book.
It's such a violation, personally and professionally. I found some of my books pirated this week. I wanted to ask the person who took them if it would be ok if I came by and stole her paycheck. Somehow I don't think she would want me to do that. And I certainly don't feel I have the right to do that.
I write my stories to share them, but it's also my job - one I work very, very hard at. I truly earn the money I'm supposed to get paid. And other authors do to. :(

we work our butts off with our books Wendi and sometimes it work and sometimes the promo doesn;t work but this is what we love...We do what we do and get paid for it. This is not just a job..This is a passion and we deserve respect and not to have our work stolen
