Driving.....Manners..Safety

Today's blog is a bit different. It's on driving manners...Yeah you know there are things on the road that get to you...They get to everybody...

Friday my family and I were driving home and we heard an ambulance so we pulled over to the side and stopped so we would not block it. There were a few drivers around us that had pulled over as well. Not everybody....The ambulance was driving on all sirens and going really fast. When it got to the lights the intersection was blocked. The light turned green...

So what did people do? Did they move out of the way? Yes but not to the side..They just went on their merry way blocking the ambulance. I saw one guy on his cell phone who didn't look like he ever cared he was blocking the poor ambulance...Can you believe that? It's like come on..When it is an ambulance you MOVE....Don't people realize or care that every second counts?

That one split second could cost somebody their life. I wanted to scream when I saw that. The ambulance was honking and trying to get the guy out of the way. He finally decided to move after a few moments. What if it was him in that ambulance going to the hospital?

My question is...Do people not know road rules? If not then how on earth did they get their licence to drive?...This is something that happens so often on the roads.

People don't signal when they switch lanes, cut people off, speed, run red light....Are people that irresponsible and looking for a death wish?

I don't understand...Why cant people have some courtesy or manners while they drive. Drive safe instead of recklessly...

So many times you see so much reckless driving on the street and the worst part is most the time its the person getting hurt that's not the reckless one...

I guess what I'm trying to say is, it shouldn't be tedious to turn on your blinker, or stop at a green light, let an ambulance through or any other driving maneuver...It only takes a second...

That one second can change your life...

It's true! Alot of this stuff happens in Toronto! Are you surprised when it happens? No, cause believe it or not it happens alot! Some drivers believe it's all about them...for example, like in your story you said "When the lights turned green they moved but not to the side just kept on going forward on their merry way" like nothing was behind them. You feel like yelling at them but it's not worth it. Here is a story what happend yesterday...I was at Wal-Mart and the people beside me where backing up, but a woman behind them was backing up at the same time and she almost hit them...what happened the man beside me got out of his car and when to the old woman's car and told her off...he called her names and told her to get off the road. What do we called that ROAD RAGE! Even though the elderly lady should have watched where she was going and the man as well. People have forgotten road manners and from the looks of it...it's not going to get any better! Great on Savannah!

it is not getting better at all, i think it only gets worse..i see sometimes the driving schools teaching people to drive and well they can't drive....the driving school has no idea what they are doing and this is what they teach people

thank you Marly, it is something that many people deal with on the road and this just should not be happening

It is like that here too. No one even pays attention to emergancy vehicles. One of the reasons is that they really don't hear them.
the music or cell phone are all they are hearing. Another is the sirens on the new ambulances are eletronic. They just don't get the attention like the old "federal Q" ones did. In the 60's If an Ambulance turned on that siren you could hear it for miles. You knew which amb. it was and who was driving by the sound. There was no way that they could be ignored.

Great blog, Savannah - wish it wasn't true, but we see it even in a small town in the upper midwest, sadly.

It's true that a lot of people just don't care and pay attention to what's going on around them. They run red-lights and talk on their phone as they pull in front of other cars.
On a similar topic- in the south we pull over when a funeral procession goes by, as a show of respect for the dead. We get irate when others don't do it. I've seen some try to pass the group. Do you all do that in Canada?

Mamaw here you can notice the ambulance because it is very loud, even with the new ambulances they are very loud..oh yes cell phones...you see cars not staying in their lane because the driver is yapping away....

Adriana, I wish it wasn't true either but unless people start being more responsible while driving things are not going to look up..with thechnology going up and up there are new little gadgets to occupy people with even while they drive...

Kissa some people pull over and some dont bother...they should....usually we have a cop car leading the line and one that stops traffic and all..Not always...

I totally agree with you Samantha. It seems that quite a few people have forgotten the rules.

About three months ago I was taking my son to school and I had this woman make a left hand turn right infront of me. She was in the turn lane, but the green arrow light had turned off and my light changed to green. I was already moving when she decided to turn. The worst part of it was that she wasn't even paying attention. She was too busy talking on her cell phone. So I put on the breaks and honked my horn at her to let her know that she was in the wrong. She just looked and was like, "Oh." That was the part that really burnt my hide. Some people just don't learn.

Dani, I can't tell you how many times I see that on the road..It's like oh...you are suppose to let me do that...I just want to scream...

Great post! And I can't tell you how much rude driving bothers me. I'm terrified every time my husband takes his motorcycle out that some idiot is going to run him over.

And on the funeral processions ... yes, we do pull over in the south, at least in the rural south. When I went home for my grandfather's funeral several months ago and oncoming traffic pulled off the shoulder as a show of respect, it almost undid me more than the service itself. In Tampa that wouldn't happen. People just don't give a crap. A lot of them don't even bother to stop when they run a pedestrian over. Our newspapers offer proof of that. It makes me furious and incredibly sad, I'm not sure which emotion it stirs more.

oh yes, the newspaper does show proof..Just 2 days a go there was a huge accident on the highway where a van with 4 people flipped over the median and onto the other side of traffic. All 4 people were thrown out of the car because they were not wearing a seat belt and speeding....
