Writer’s are secret super heroes....

It’s time to get into the swing of things. It’s Saturday and it’s my first blog here at Nice n’ Naughty. Well those are just two words that describe me perfectly...

I want to say thank you to Anne and to my fellow naughty authors for inviting me to be a part of this wonderful place.

So today I’m blogging and it’s on the topic of writing and pen names.
Yah we writers have pen names and some have more than one name. Why do we need a pen name? Don’t you know? It’s because we want to be like super heroes. Whatever career job we have during the day and writer by night....LOL...Isn’t that a cool thing.

When it comes to pen names it all depends on the author with regards to why they decide to take on a pen name. There are a lot of writers who have day jobs that would frown at knowing that they write romance or erotica. They want to keep their writing life separate from their professional day job. Some authors choose to have multiple names to separate themselves with the different genre books they write. Readers get use to a name and they associate that name with certain books.

I remember when I first had my name decided on, I made sure to check it out and Google it to see that there were no other authors or people using it so I would not have trouble. Luckily I was good to go...but that didn’t last long. About a year after that Google I got an email and it turned out my name was being used by a porn star. Yes you heard it correctly.....

No, don’t get any ideas..I’m a regular working woman by day and a writer by night....Not a porn star....

So with that knowledge I had to go back to the drawing board and come up with something else.

After a list of about 20 names I settled on my favourite. That’s how Savannah came to life...It’s funny when I look back at what I had written down, some of them sounded like stripper names and some just sounded too funny. But that’s the fun part and something to always remember.

I wonder what names people would choose if they had to come up with a pen name?

Having a name that is memorable will help readers remember you and that makes a big deal. It takes a reader many times to hear your name before they permanently remember it.

And your very first try you came up with a stripper name...lol...sounds like me. My pen name was actually pretty easy...my first name is my nickname and my last name just came to me while I was looking at a sign!
Great blog Savannah. I loved it!

LOL I love how you almost had a porn star name. Mine is rather straightforward. I couldn't use my real name because it was closely associated with activist writing, and I quit that nonsense. I chose "Elizabeth" because that is my favorite female name. "Black" because the B's are at eye level on the bookstore shelves.

Great post!

I picked mine because I love the name Paige! And I paired it with Tyler because it seems like they just go together!

However, when doing that cute little thing to figure out our porn star names, you know your childhood pet's name plue the street you grea up on, mine would be Boots Meyer! LOL!

*hugs*
Paige

I've heard some people have chosen their name so it's similar or close in the alphabet to a big name author such as JR Ward or Nora Roberts. That way, when the book is shelved, it's close to Nora's and the author figures more people will see it that way. *shrug* I chose a name that's a variation on my maiden name. Who knows if anyone will be able to spell it though.

Hi Savannah, what a great blog. Sometimes I wish that I'd chosen a name with a little more "umph" shall we say? But I have written a few not so spicey tales, so I guess that Megan Rose is a name suitable for any occasion :)

I write under a pen name as well. I wasn't at first. But after I got the contract for Haley's Cabin, my husband insisted on reading a few chapters of the story...after a few hours in the bedroom, he said something like, 'you're writing under a pen name, no way in hell are guys going to know who you really are'. LOL

So, Anne Rainey was born...after coming up with several others and discarding them all.

Though I do have a name ready in case I choose to write something other than Erotic Romance. Not telling what that name is either. ;)

My hubby chose my pen name. The one I had always wanted to use (my middle name + my maiden name) was already being used by another author. I kicked around lots of ideas, and one day in the car he suggested Cassandra Gold. I instantly loved it. He's a genius (sometimes) :)
